What an oral and maxillofacial surgeon is.
An oral and maxillofacial surgeon is a dental specialist trained in surgery of the mouth, the teeth, the jaws and the face. The scope runs from impacted third molars and dental implants through bone grafting, corrective jaw surgery, injury to the facial skeleton, and lesions of the oral cavity and jaws.
The training is what separates it. Residency is served across hospital and outpatient services, caring for medically complex patients as well as straightforward ones, and it is the only dental residency that includes formal anesthesia training on a hospital anesthesia service. That is why sedation and general anesthesia are given here, in our own suites, instead of being arranged somewhere else.
OAKS exists so that this work is done by surgeons trained for it, in rooms equipped for it. Dr. Beshai and Dr. Farahi each completed a residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery, and the practice runs two suites, in Bakersfield and Valencia.
We do not restore teeth and we do not take over your dental care. We handle the surgical phase, document it, and hand you back to the dentist who sent you.

Dr. Rami Beshai is an oral and maxillofacial surgeon who provides thoughtful, evidence based, and patient centered care. His clinical interests include wisdom teeth, dental implants, bone grafting, facial trauma, corrective jaw surgery, pathology, and office based anesthesia.
Dr. Beshai earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery from the UCLA School of Dentistry, completed an internship program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in Chicago, Illinois, then completed advanced surgical training in oral and maxillofacial surgery in East Bay, California. During his residency he gained extensive experience across hospital and outpatient settings, including the care of medically complex patients, maxillofacial trauma, odontogenic infections, and benign pathology.

I am a dual degree, board certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon from LA, beginning my education at UCSB, then going on to earn my DMD and MD degrees from UPenn, followed by extensive training in general and plastic surgery, and a residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery.

Surgery is performed in our own operating suites. The anesthetic is a decision we make together: local anesthesia, nitrous oxide, intravenous sedation or general anesthesia, chosen from the complexity of the surgery, your medical history and how you feel about being awake for it. There is no default.
Through any sedation or general anesthetic your heart rhythm, blood pressure, blood oxygen saturation and exhaled carbon dioxide are monitored continuously, by a trained surgical team. Office based anesthesia is what allows procedures that would otherwise mean a hospital admission to be done comfortably here.
Imaging is done on site. A panoramic radiograph, and a cone beam CT scan where the case calls for one, is what the surgical plan is built from.
